Chapter 35

The time was now 3:45 am. Officer Spencer and Jane entered Jake’s room. He was fast asleep, so she sat in the chair next to the bed. Officer Spencer stood on the other side of the bed with his arms folded. He was upset at seeing his hero, his role model, lying there wounded. Jane looked at Jake with sorrow. She rose up from her chair and gently kissed him on the forehead.

‘Let’s go, Jane. He’s asleep. We’ll try and come later,’ Spencer whispered.

‘I’m staying here with him.’

‘You can’t. You’re under my responsibility.’

‘Please, Spencer. This man saved my life. He sacrificed his life to save me. I want to be here when he wakes up. I haven’t thanked him yet.’

‘I can’t, Jane. This is-’

‘Please.’

Officer Spencer sighed. ‘Look, I’ll call Chief. He’s in charge now. Whatever he says, okay?’

‘Okay.’

Spencer left the room to speak with Chief, who was back at the station in charge of everything while Sheriff Jake stayed in hospital. Jane stood up and leant over Jake, who looked peaceful in his sleep. She felt more than just respect and gratitude for the wounded sheriff. She also felt something else - love. It wasn’t full-blown love. But her heart had begun to stir. It started when Jake first sat next to her in the cell back at the station. His warm smile, his beautiful eyes, and the way he spoke endeared him to her. This was a strange sensation for her. She’d never experienced this kind of feeling in her heart before. She felt like lying down next to him and putting her head on his chest and holding him, listening to his heartbeat; that brave and caring heart. As she thought these things, Officer Spencer came back in.

‘Chief said its okay. He’s coming himself in a few hours, anyway.’

Jane stood up and walked over to Officer Spencer and hugged him. ‘Thank you, Spence.’

‘What for?’ he asked, folding his arms.

‘For everything. If it wasn’t for you tonight, I ... I don’t know-’

‘Yeah, yeah, whatever.’ Spencer would often act tough to hide his emotions. He didn’t like showing them. He thought of it as a sign of weakness. When he folded his arms, it would often be an indicator that he was getting emotional.

Jane kissed him on the cheek and let him go.

‘Fine. Whatever,’ Spencer said, and walked out of the room, with his arms still folded.

It suddenly occurred to Jane that Spencer hadn’t finished the story and ran out of the room after him.

‘Hey. Aren’t you forgetting something?’

‘What?’ Spencer asked as he checked all his pockets.

‘What happened? What happened after Jake went into the house?’

Spencer smiled. ‘He came out with the three girls,’ he said with pride.

‘How? How did he do it?’

‘You’ll have to ask him that yourself,’ he said, as he winked at Jane and then walked away. Jane smiled as she watched him walk away and returned to the room.

Jane was now alone with Sheriff Jake. A nurse came and gave her a blanket for the night.
